ShockSim3D Perforating Simulation Software and Shock Sensing Sub
ShockSim3D is a simulation software package developed to predict the complex, dynamic effects of perforating gun string detonation in order to minimize failure risk and optimize performance. The software predicts the dynamic pressure response through out the gunstring, the entire wellbore, and annulus as well as the dynamic response of the gunstring. Starboard offers independent ShockSim3D simulation services to its customers under license from Halliburton. ShockSim3D was developed and calibrated using extensive surface testing and downhole gauge data including data from the Halliburton HPET tool, designed by Starboard for this purpose.
Advantages of ShockSim3D include the following:
- Full 3-D solid model including the effects of bending due to gravity, casing contact, buckling, etc.
- More accurate interior gun pressure loading.
- More accurate structural wave propagation and stresses through tool connections.
- High-resolution of fluid and solid models.
- Identification of failure modes often unobservable in 1-D simulations including localize gun or spacer burst/collapse, tubing damage, and packer damage.
- Prediction of shock-induced damage to other sensitive equipment in the string.

- Pressure predictions and fluid velocities for wellbore interior, annulus, perforation tunnels.
- Structural loads, stresses, deformation, and damage.
- Dynamic underbalance (DUB) prediction.
- Perf tunnel cleanout including the fine distribution of performance across long intervals.
- Formation fracture prediction.
- Propellant simulation.
- Handling of multiple detonation intervals.
The software is customizable to handle more complex downhole configurations including:
- Prediction of damage from the selectfire of one loaded interval on another, including stackdown of charge tubes.
- Nonlinear gun connectors that include freeplay or shock absorbers.
- Specialized or sensitive tools and equipment incorporated into the gun string and predictions of acceleration levels, loading, and component damage.

- Pre-job analysis of perforating jobs.
- Sensitivity studies to minimize risk of damage or to optimize performance including DUB distribution and clean-out distribution.
